On top of the normal calories contained in fibre based feeds, horses naturally generate heat as a byproduct of the fibre fermentation process in the hindgut which helps maintain their body temperature.
This microbial fermentation process does not happen with grain based feeds, which means increasing the amount you feed to ensure your horse has the extra energy to stay warm. Higher rates of grain based concentrates may lead to digestive upsets, ulcers and behavioural issues.
